The Great Volcanic Time Machine: Glowing Caves & Striped Cliffs
Description
Overview
Our journey begins in Dogashima, a renowned scenic spot. Here, you will find exposed layers of volcanic ash and pumice over 20 meters thick, etched with beautiful striped patterns carved by the waves over millennia. As evidence of ancient submarine volcanoes appears one after another, you can’t help but wonder: how fierce were the eruptions that took place here?
As we walk, reflecting on these ancient times, we will visit a must-see site: Buddhist statues carved directly into a pumice cave at the edge of the Sawada settlement. As your eyes adjust to the darkness, you will begin to see them—figures adorned with halos as radiant as the famous Nishiizu sunset.
