For four centuries, the Old Tokaido Highway has linked Japan’s modern capital of Tokyo with the ancient capital of Kyoto.
Kanaya and Nissaka post towns had important roles for people to rest & prepare to cross the Oi river and take on some of the steepest passes of the journey.
This guided small-group day tour involves about 8km walking (approx.4 hours) including one of the three most difficult passes on Tokaido, “Saya no Nakayama Pass”.

Itinerary

1	Meet up at 9:30 a.m. at JR Tokaido Line Kanaya Station and start walking Tokaido!
2	Kanaya-saka stone-paved path→Suwahara Castle Remains→Kikugawa-saka stone-paved path Ai no Shuku, Kikugawa-juku (the mid-station) Saya no Nakayama Pass(one of the three most difficult passes on Tokaido)
3	Visit Kyuenji temple where Ieyasu, Mr. Tokyo visited and the Ukiyo-e Gallery ‘Yume Akari’, a boutique private collection gallery of Hokusai and Hiroshige Tokaido woodblock prints featuring some rare pieces at 10:40-11:20
4	Enjoy the view of Mt. Awagatake, the mountain with the kanji “茶” means tea, over green tea fields Nissaka-syuku : Honjin Remains/Hatago Kawazakaya Remains
5	Enjoy Lunch including local specialty dessert ‘warabi mochi’, a traditional dessert made from bracken starch at 12:20-13:20
6	Visit Koto-no-mama Hachimangu Shrine *You can take a bus to Kakegawa Shinkansen Station from Koto-no-mama Hachimangu Shrine (20mins) or You can stay at Tabinoya guesthouse and rest with the nostalgic Goemon-buro Bath and the local home-style dishes (10mins walk from the shrine)
