Things to Do in Shizuoka, Japan – Wellness Experience: Try Waterfall Meditation at the over 1,300-year-old Yusanji Temple. Purify Yourself and Find the New You!

Yusanji temple– where you can get energized!

Yusanji temple was built in the year 701 and has been well known as a temple for eye health since the 8th century. At that time, the 46th emperor recovered from an eye disease after using water from the Ruri waterfall to wash out his eyes. This waterfall is where you will try meditation. It will be a unique experience in a setting like no other! Since then, Yusanji has been a sacred place for emperors, lords and many others. They have donated numerous historic buildings to the temple grounds, and  many of these buildings are registered as national and prefectural cultural heritage properties. For example, the temple’s three-storied pagoda is one of the three famous pagodas of 16th century Japan.

In addition to the historic and cultural backgrounds, ample nature gives you a relaxing time. Take a deep breath while walking under the trees and spending your time with the soothing sounds of birds and the nearby creek.

What is Waterfall Meditation? – Wellness Experience

What is waterfall meditation or Takigyo in Japanese about? It is a part of the ascetic practices in Buddhism that lead to rebirth into a new self. The practice is done to better your life now as well as your future lives. This is based on the Buddhist principle ‘karma’. Briefly speaking, karma refers to an action which is driven by the idea that it will bring future consequences. So, the waterfall meditation is believed to be a way to reset regrettable behaviors.

To begin, change into your swimsuit and then put on a white cloth which is like a thin kimono. Once you are ready,  walk to the waterfall with the Buddhist monk while listening to the explanation about meditation. When you reach the waterfall, the meditation begins! Take off your sandals before getting into the water (as it is a sacred place), then, pray to the god called Fudo Myoo. Finally, move into the waterfall and pass under the hanging rope which is a boundary between the human world and the sacred world. Here, you can be connected to the god while hearing the Buddhist monk chant a sutra. You may try reciting the sutra in the waterfall as well. Feel the water coming down on your neck and empty your mind for a moment. If you feel that time is moving faster than usual, that is the moment when you are connected to the god! This is a great wellness experience too.

When I tried this waterfall meditation, the water felt cold at the beginning even though it was summer. However, I was gradually able to empty my mind and the time passed very quickly! After the experience, I felt a refreshing sensation like I had met a new me. I felt more motivated and livelier. It is difficult to find the proper words to describe the feelings, so if you are interested in this experience, why don’t you try it for yourself? Apart from the waterfall meditation, it was interesting to learn about Buddhist tenets and how they exist in our daily lives.

About the Buddhist monk: Mr.Kaiho

Mr. Kaiho inherited the temple from his father and became the head priest about 5 years ago. He wants to make the temple a place for everyone and has been developing the temple’s atmosphere under this aspiration. For example, he installed benches so that people can sit and relax or maybe have a nap. He also reinforced the embankment along the river so that kids can play in the water. Moreover, he plans to make the path wheelchair-friendly.

His aspiration is led by experiences from his time in college. He traveled around Japan (five times!) on his motorcycle, similar to his favorite historic figure: Kukai. Kukai was a monk who is known to have launched one of the sects of Buddhism which traveled throughout Japan.

While traveling, Mr. Kaiho met many people who helped him by providing food, accommodations, and fuel for his motorcycle, for example. He learned that he was alive because he was supported by others.

This experience compelled him to transform the temple for everyone.

With regard to the waterfall mediation, Mr. Kaiho explains that ascetic practice should be something that motivates people to grow and therefore creates a good cycle of making the practice routine. This is why he believes that something that is too hard or requires too much patience should not be an ascetic practice. That can hinder people from making it part of their daily routine and thus it’s hard to feel growth.

Under this belief, he welcomes anyone to try the experience and hopes to make them happier.

But, as with much of Japan, dig a little deeper and you will discover a relatively unknown gem to experience Japanese local, cultural life, beautiful nature, and fun outdoor activities.

Towering over the Sudo Valley, Bungy Japan has a jump of 54m high with stunning views of waterfalls and the city itself in the distance.

However, if leaping from great heights is not your thing, the area is stunning for it’s autumn koyo foliage, having a refreshing swim in the rivers during that intense summer heat, and simply just enjoying the beautiful natural scenery.

Camping is also possible in the area.

Things to Do in Shizuoka, Japan – Spend a night at a traditional Japanese farmhouse in one of the largest green tea producing areas!

Spend a night at a traditional Japanese farmhouse and enjoy a green tea experience

Tabinoya

If you want to relax in the Japanese countryside and experience green tea activities with locals, Shizuoka is a great fit for you. In addition, if you are interested in Japanese history, you can visit some nearby ruins of historic Japan. About two hours away from Tokyo by bullet train, Kakegawa in Shizuoka Prefecture has all of these things.

Situated in one of the largest green tea producing areas is Tabinoya. Tabinoya is a renovated 70-year-old Japanese inn, which was once a green tea farmhouse. It’s located in a small post town along the centuries-old Tokaido Highway, and it offers a laid-back stay which includes green tea experiences with locals. Staying in Tabinoya, you will get a glimpse of the lifestyle of farmers who once lived there, as well as other Japanese people in the area.

The owner has inherited the wisdom of ancestors who used to live at the farmhouse. That wisdom is how to get food from nature, and the value of trading without money. The bamboo and plum trees surrounding Tabinoya are used to make bamboo shoot tempura and plum wine. So, the basic approach to food has been to make what you eat. The locals also share their food with community members. In Tabinoya, you will enjoy homemade meals using locally produced ingredients. If you help prepare meals, you will learn some of this wisdom.

Tabinoya has two bedrooms. One is a Japanese style tatami room and the other is a western style bedroom. The property comes with a large, iron, cauldron-shaped bathtub called “goemon-buro” which is said to have been popularized in feudal times.

Green Tea Experience

Mr. Sugimoto explains about Chagusaba

Since Tabinoya used to be owned by a tea farmer and is located in a green tea producing area, tea is deeply rooted in the life of residents. The green tea experience is key for travelers to dig deeper into local living. Tabinoya offers different green tea experiences depending on the time of year. For example: harvesting tea leaves, visiting a tea factory, or cutting grass to prepare for the next planting season.

Besides the fact that Kakegawa is one of the largest green tea producing regions, what makes the area stand out is the technique used to grow tea. Many of the farmers employ the traditional tea-grass integrated system which is recognized as a Globally Important Agricultural Heritage System by the United Nations. It utilizes “Chagusaba(semi-natural grasslands)”. The farmers cut the grasses and place them on the tea farms as natural fertilizer and moisturizer for Chagusaba. You can learn more about Chagusaba here.

One of the partners of Tabinoya, Mr. Sugimoto, is a third-generation local tea farmer who has been producing quality green tea using the Chagusaba farming method. His farms are surrounded by wild broadleaf bamboo and thus it is necessary to cut them down.

“It is hard work to cut the broadleaf bamboo, chop them into small pieces and then spread them to the bottom of the green tea roots. However, I continue to preserve what I have inherited from my ancestors,” Mr. Sugimoto said.

When we stepped onto the field which used Chagusaba, it was noticeably softer and we were able to tell straight away that something was different.

About the Owners of Tabinoya: Mr. & Ms. Yamada

Mr. & Ms. Yamada will warmly welcome you.

After decades of working for a travel agency, Mr. Yamada started his second life in Okinawa; a southern, tropical island of Japan which is also a popular travel destination. He was attracted to its unique culture, fostered by the tumultuous history, and he hoped to live closer to locals. One day, he came up with the idea to make use of off-season holiday houses owned by residents in the area. He registered the houses to Airbnb, hoping for the guests to have authentic Okinawan experiences just like he wanted. In the meantime, he also developed the activities of locals (sugarcane harvesting, barbecuing on a beach, visiting secret beaches, freediving, etc.) into tours so that travelers could experience life in that community.

Gradually and naturally, he wanted to set up his own business and so he started looking for a place to start. Having considered several locations (I could write a chapter for just this story), he ended up launching his business in his hometown: Kakegawa, Shizuoka.

“The cup of green tea that I had there after a long time was really flavorful,” Mr. Yamada said.

Similar to Okinawa, Kakegawa has its own unique features to share. He wants to help travelers have authentic experiences by interacting with locals and he hopes they will bring those experiences back to their own homes. For example, if travelers enjoy green tea in Kakegawa, it will be great if they can enjoy green tea back in their home country as well. Not only do travelers get impactful experiences, but he also hopes locals will learn from the travelers and benefit mutually. This is his ongoing mission.

Makinohara City is located in the central region of Shizuoka Prefecture. The city, with a long stretch of Pacific Ocean coastline, is part of the “Makinohara Uplands / Plains”, which is famous for green tea plantations.

The Makinohara Uplands / Plains area was developed and cultivated to grow green tea after the Meiji Restoration of 1868 by a former retainer of the Tokugawa Shogunate.

Today green tea plantations and fields in the Makinohara Uplands / Plains cover an area of more than 12,000 acres (5,000 hectares) and are said to make up about 12% of all green tea fields in Japan.

GREEN TEA FIELDS / GRINPIA MAKINOHARA

One of the larger plantations on the Makinohara Plains is managed by Grinpia Makinohara, which offers visitors a chance to learn every aspect of green tea including cultivation and processing. Tea-making machines from the early Showa period are displayed in the small exhibition room.

BEACH LIFE

Makinohara is blessed with long stretches of beaches along the Pacific Ocean coast that produce some great waves.

In the Summer the beaches are a popular destination for locals looking to escape the heat, and a laid back beach culture has slowly developed over several decades.

Shizunami and Sagara Sun Beach are the most popular beaches in the area and popular with sun lovers, surfers and families.

Things to Do in Shizuoka, Japan- Culture and Nature Experience: Hike 500-Year-Old Tokaido to Experience Ancient and Modern Japan!

Reasons to Travel to Shizuoka, Japan – Hike Tokaido

Mt.Fuji Shinkansen
Mt.Fuji and the Tokaido Shinkansen

You might have seen this iconic photo of Mt.Fuji and the Tokaido Shinkansen bullet train. Guess where it is taken? If you travel between Tokyo and Kyoto, you will find the symbolic mountain in Shizuoka.

Traveling routes have played an important role for centuries to facilitate the flow of people, goods and information, and thus have supported the development of Japan. The high speed bullet train is surely one of Japan’s greatest innovations in the 1960s.

Tokaido Shinkansen bullet train is named after the 500-year-old Tokaido foot-highway because it closely follows the ancient road, which links Tokyo with Kyoto and Osaka, Japan’s new and old capital cities.

So, when you travel between these cities, you follow the footprints of Samurai and Shogun. The Shinkansen takes a little over 2 hours to get to Kyoto from Tokyo, whereas it took about 2 weeks for ordinary travelers and 3-4 days for couriers on foot in feudal times.

Are you interested in hiking this centuries old path, contrasting the modern and ancient route?

Here’s what we offer!

Learn more about Tokaido.

Hike the Best Part of Tokaido, Hakone Hachiri, and Enjoy Ancient and Modern Japan – Experience Japanese Culture and Nature!

Hakone Hachiri is a section of old Tokaido (just an hour from Tokyo) which has recently been declared a Japan Heritage Area. You will learn about both Japanese culture and nature during the hiking.

In Japanese, Hachi means 8 and Ri is a unit of distance equivalent to about 4km (2.5 miles). So Hakone Hachiri is the 32km (20 mile) stretch of old Tokaido between Odawara and Mishima (a setting in James Clavell’s epic novel “Shogun“), via Hakone.

In this tour, you will hike the best parts of the Tokaido route, skipping over modern busy roads by bus.

It enables you to enjoy walking the remaining parts of the original Hakone Hachiri path through the forest to Lake Ashinoko and Cedar Avenue, lined both sides with towering 400 year old Japanese cedar.

In addition, you will visit Amazake Chaya teahouse, one of the few remaining of hundreds of teahouses that adorned old Tokaido, Hakone checkpoint, the most strictly inspected checkpoint in feudal times as it was the closest to the shogun in Edo (Tokyo), Yamanaka Castle Ruins with its unique “waffle maker” fortifications, and Genbegawa World Water System Heritage Area where you can cool down with spring water from Mt. Fuji.

It is a great fit for people who want to hear stories of and see ancient and modern Japan through hiking. We also hope that you enjoy observing how Japan has developed by comparing the old and new parts of Tokaido, imagine the lives of people in feudal times, immerse yourself into a different culture and get energized by hiking through the forest and cedar avenue!

About your tour guide – Tony Everitt

Tony with Mt.Fuji

‘Because Japan is fascinating!’. This was how Tony answered when I asked how he got interested in Japan. He passionately talked about how Japan, and later a living Tokaido road and Hakone Hachiri, attracted him.

Having been influenced by his father as a kid, Tony first got to know about Japan through its quality products and technologies such as Yamaha, Honda, Toyota, Sony, etc., as well as the world’s first bullet train Tokaido shinkansen that became a driving force for the rapid development of Japan after the World War II. He wanted to know the secret behind Japan’s ability to rapidly develop and produce such fine products.

‘Tokaido is great because it’s a living road!’ Tony adds. Tokaido has been one of the most important roads for centuries and is still Japan’s main arterial route. Tony wants to share knowledge and experience that he has gained through his decades of endeavor in Japan through heritage stories to those who are curious about the secrets of development of Japan.

The Green Tea Experiences: ‘Shizuoka Tea with…’

In Shizuoka– one of Japan’s biggest green tea producers!

Shizuoka is one of the top-ranked green tea producers in Japan. It is said that green tea cultivation in Shizuoka began in 1244 when tea seeds were brought back from China.

With centuries of tradition, you will see Shizuoka still produces some of the finest green tea. It’s carefully cultivated by local farmers at both large and small plantations, with row upon row of green tea hedges. If you enjoy this iconic Japanese drink, why don’t you dig in deeper through the ‘Shizuoka Tea with…’ experience?

It is the best fit for people who seek authentic green tea through experiences such as visiting a green tea farm, harvesting tea leaves from spring to autumn, and sampling the best green tea produced there. We also hope that you can immerse yourself into a different culture, escape from the daily hustle and bustle, and learn from tea farmers about the luxury of living in harmony with nature.

Shizuoka Tea with Kyoko-san – Nukumorien Yururi, Shizuoka city

At her farm, green tea is raised in a relaxed way– just like how she is. Organic farming is one of our favorite features of Kyoko-san’s tea. She uses naturally sourced fertilizer such as fermented soy, which allows the tea to grow freely in an organic environment.

She says her tea leaves are uneven, which some people might not see as beautiful, yet she likes that they are raised in a natural and lively way. It’s just like how she respects an individual person’s own unique traits.

With Kyoko-san’s relaxing atmosphere, you’ll enjoy visiting green tea fields where a few varieties are grown. You can experience tea leaf picking* (you can taste them too) and drinking the green tea– often accompanied with little homemade sweets and a pleasant chat with Kyoko-san. Perhaps you can also take a nap on a tatami mat and feel the breath of nature.

If you are interested in staying a little longer, you can have homemade lunch with seasonal vegetables from 1,000 yen, or perhaps relax and feel a soothing breeze on engawa, a Japanese-style veranda to appreciate the balance of living with nature.

*Green tea picking is available from May to October

Shizuoka Green Tea Experience with Shiratori-san – Okakae Chaen Kanebun, Shizuoka city

This is where you can motivate yourself and recharge your battery by learning from the philosophy of green tea production which has been passed to new generations for over a century.

The name of the tea farm is Okakae Chaen. ‘Okakae’ means ‘personal staff’ or ‘exclusively belonging to you’, while ‘chaen’ means ‘tea farm’. This perfectly explains what Shiratori-san strives for. When we asked what ‘okakae’ was, he answered proudly, but with a bit of shyness.

“Expensive green tea is not always valuable to everyone. Each customer has his/her own favorite tastes, and thus I hope to provide the green tea that meets his/her needs. This is what motivates me to grow, produce and sell my special green tea as well as why I keep asking myself whether I can be a good okakae to my customers. I do not choose who to sell to, rather I wish to provide good tea that everyone can enjoy.”

He gives guests a good welcome with his charming personality and quality green tea. Here, you will learn how to serve good tea, the difference of tea flavor depending on water temperature, and various ways to enjoy the tea.

You can see Mt. Fuji from his tea room, if weather permits. Moreover, if you are motivated to wake up early and climb the hill, you might have an opportunity to see the stunning view of a sea of clouds on green tea farms, with Mt.Fuji in the background.

How to book ‘Shizuoka Tea with…’
